This is but a small slice of a typical conversation between my two best friends. In a couple of lines, it pretty much sums up their relationship. It might sound angry but it is actually anything but. As a way to diffuse tension and frustration, this typical back and forth volley helps them cope with the daily ritual of living and with each other. I have the greatest respect for these two because they have chosen not to turn their long-term partnership into that tired and worn out institution of marriage. They are committed to each other but have the courage to eschew heteronormative expectations. I applaud that!
